2018 Jeep Compass vs 2018 Hyundai Tucson near Bethel Park, PA

There are so many compact crossover SUVs on the market these days it can be a tiring process trying to narrow it down to the best model for your needs. In the last few years, we believe that two models have stood out from the rest: the 2018 Jeep Compass and the 2018 Hyundai Tucson. The Compass is a Jeep through and through offering incredibly advanced features and off-roading capabilities. The Compass was completely redesigned last year but Jeep is still keeping things fresh and relevant with a few new updates for the 2018 model year like the availability of 4WD on the Limited model. The Tucson is a great choice when it comes to safety and comfort but don't expect any off-roading capabilities. Changes for the 2018 model year include a reordering of the trim levels and the addition of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on higher trim levels. The Compass is clearly off to a better start but keep reading to learn which compact crossover SUV comes out on top!

2018 Jeep Compass Power & Handling

Each 2018 Compass model is powered by a 2.4L Tigershark MultiAir 2 engine that cranks out 180 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque. This engine utilizes MultiAir 2 technology to maximize the intake manifold pressure and manage the combustion quality, this helps the engine run more effectively and efficiently! Depending on the model and drivetrain you pick there are a few transmission options including a six-speed manual, six-speed automatic, and a nine-speed automatic. Compass models that are equipped with an automatic transmission also feature engine start/stop technology to enhance fuel economy and lower emissions. The EPA estimates that this engine can achieve up to 32 miles per gallon on the highway with front-wheel drive and the manual transmission. 4WD models can tow up to 2,000 pounds while the Trailhawk models bump that up to 3,600 pounds. Available off-roading capabilities include the Selec-Terrain Traction Management System and Jeep Active Drive. Jeep Active Drive Low is standard on the Trailhawk model.

2018 Hyundai Tucson Power & Handling

Hyundai offers two engine options for the 2018 Tucson. The first is a 2.0L 4-cylinder that produces 164 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. With front-wheel drive, this engine is estimated to reach 30 miles per gallon on the highway. You'll have to opt for a higher trim level to gain the second engine option, a 1.6L turbocharged 4-cylinder that delivers 175 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. With this engine and FWD, the Tucson can get up to 30 miles per gallon on the highway as well. Front wheel drive is standard but you have the ability to upgrade to AWD on all models.

2018 Jeep Compass Features & Design

The Compass is an incredibly bold and stylish compact crossover SUV that takes design cues from the Grand Cherokee. There are four trim levels available for the 2018 model year: Sport, Latitude, Trailhawk and the Limited. Standard features include a six-speaker sound system, 8 cargo tie-down loops, Bluetooth connectivity, a USB port, push-button start, remote keyless entry, air conditioning, a 5-inch central touchscreen interface with Uconnect, rear seat with 60/40 split folding, and 16-inch wheels. You'll find more advanced features like leather upholstery, automatic dual-zone climate control, an 8.5-inch touchscreen with upgraded Uconnect, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Trailhawk model comes equipped with off-roading features like a unique front fascia, red tow hooks, its very own Selec-Terrain Management System, a raised suspension and so much more! There are also quite a few packages available to add more features including a power liftgate, Beats audio system, and so much more!

2018 Hyundai Tucson Features & Design

The Tucson is available in six trim levels ranging from the base SE to the top of the line Limited. Standard features include heated mirrors, a rearview camera, a 5-inch touchscreen, cloth upholstery, a height adjustable driver seat, a six-speaker sound system, Bluetooth, a rearview camera, and automatic headlights. As you move up through the trim levels you'll gain features like Hyundai's Blue Link, an 8-inch touchscreen, a panoramic sunroof, 19-inch wheels, leather upholstery, keyless entry and ignition, and more. Hyundai doesn't offer any optional packages for the Tucson so you can't further customize for all your needs.

Conclusions

We definitely think that Jeep Compass comes out on top here. The Compass' engine is more powerful and fuel-efficient than both options available for the Tucson. When it comes to standard features the Compass is superior as well. Plus how could the Tucson compete with an entire trim level dedicated to the best off-roading possible?
