How Capable is the 2024 Jeep Compass?
The Compass's recently introduced turbocharged 2.0L inline four-cylinder engine is returning for its third model year. Boasting an impressive 200 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque, the 2024 Compass is the most powerful vehicle in its class. The switch to a turbocharged engine from the previous naturally aspirated engine was a welcome change for two reasons. First is the increase in power we just mentioned. The second benefit is that while increasing the power, efficiency was not sacrificed, as the turbocharging unit supplemented additional power while allowing for a smaller engine displacement. Adding to the vehicle's capabilities is Jeep's innovative Active Drive 4x4 system, which seamlessly transitions between two-wheel and four-wheel drive modes without requiring driver input. This system employs a network of sensors, a disconnecting rear axle, and a power transfer unit. For further customization, drivers can take command of the 4x4 system through the Selec-Terrain traction management system, offering Auto, Snow, Sand/Mud, Sport, and available Rock modes.
What's Special About the Jeep Compass Trailhawk?
If you plan on hitting the trails with a new Compass, the Trailhawk trim level is designed with you in mind. Its off-road prowess begins with the Active Drive Low 4x4 system, featuring a two-speed transfer case to provide a 4-Low drive mode. When in 4-Low mode, the system sends more torque to the wheels while crawling at low speeds, which is essential for tackling rugged terrain. The Compass's aforementioned Selec-Terrain system is upgraded for the Trailhawk, adding Rock mode to optimize the powertrain for slow rock crawls. Beyond the Trailhawk's impressive 4x4 system, it also features an array of specialized equipment to help you along your off-road journeys. First, the Trailhawk includes an off-road-tuned suspension with a one-inch factory lift allowing for greater ground clearance and up to 19 inches of water fording capability. High-strength steel skid plates support the ground clearance for underbody protection, protecting essential components on the vehicle's undercarriage. The Trailhawk is easily spotted in the Compass lineup thanks to its distinctive design notes like red tow hooks (two front, one rear), new Falken Wildpeak all-terrain tires, an eye-catching black and red anti-glare hood decal, and more.
